Overview
Alfresco is an open, cloud-native enterprise content management (ECM) suite from Hyland that combines document management, content-centric process automation, and information governance in a single platform. Originally founded in 2005 as a pioneer of open-source ECM and acquired by Hyland in 2020, Alfresco is built on open standards and offers both a free, open-source Community Edition and a commercially supported Enterprise platform. Its repository handles large volumes of unstructured content and exposes that content to other systems through standard REST APIs and the CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services) protocol.
The platform is organized around several services: Content Services for storing, versioning, and searching documents; Process Services / Process Automation for content-driven workflows; Governance Services for records management and information lifecycle control; Intelligence Services for automatic metadata extraction and content enrichment via cloud AI; and Federation Services for indexing and acting on content that lives in other repositories without migrating it. The Digital Workspace is the modern web client end users work in to upload, find, preview, and collaborate on content from any device.
For ERP environments, Alfresco is most commonly deployed as the content repository behind business applications. The Alfresco Content Connector for SAP integrates with SAP via ArchiveLink and the SAP Document Management Service so that SAP-related documents (invoices, contracts, supporting records) are managed inside SAP screens while physically stored, secured, and retained in Alfresco. Connectors for Salesforce, Microsoft 365, and Google Workspace, plus the open REST/CMIS APIs, let teams surface ERP and CRM documents in a governed central store. Alfresco can be deployed on-premise, in private cloud, or on Kubernetes (Helm/Docker) on AWS, giving organizations control over hosting and data residency.
