Overview
ABBYY Vantage is a cloud-hosted intelligent document processing (IDP) platform that combines OCR, natural language processing, and machine learning to classify documents and extract structured data from invoices, purchase orders, receipts, contracts, identity documents, and shipping paperwork. It is built around reusable "Skills": Document Skills are pre-trained extraction models for specific document categories, and Process Skills orchestrate multiple steps such as classification, extraction, and routing into end-to-end workflows. A low-code/no-code Skill Designer lets business users train and publish custom models for proprietary document types using their own sample documents, and a Skill Catalog plus the ABBYY Marketplace provide pre-built and partner-developed skills.
ABBYY FlexiCapture is the company's longer-established on-premise and cloud capture platform, with FlexiCapture for Invoices being its most widely deployed application. It ingests invoices from email, hot folders, or scanners, extracts header and line-item fields, applies country-specific validation and tax rules, and performs purchase-order and master-data matching before passing data to an ERP or accounts-payable system. Both products target accounts payable, mailroom, onboarding, and back-office automation use cases where documents must be converted into validated, system-ready data.
The platform supports structured, semi-structured, and unstructured documents and can read printed text, handwriting, barcodes, and checkboxes across 200+ languages. Built-in Manual Review queues let operators verify and correct low-confidence fields, and continuous learning uses that feedback to improve model accuracy over time. Vantage exposes a REST API and pre-built connectors for RPA and automation platforms, allowing extracted data to be delivered as JSON or XML or pushed directly into downstream business systems including ERP, ECM, and case-management tools.

Strengths & considerations
Strengths
- Pre-trained Document Skills for common document types reduce setup time versus template-only capture
- Low-code/no-code Skill Designer lets business users build and tune extraction without developers
- Mature OCR engine (shared lineage with ABBYY FineReader) with strong multilingual and handwriting support
- Skill Catalog and ABBYY Marketplace provide reusable and partner-built skills
- Choice of cloud, on-premise, and Azure private-cloud deployment for regulated environments
Considerations
- No public list pricing; requires a sales conversation and typically multi-year, volume-based commitments
- Implementation and professional-services costs can be significant for complex deployments
- On-premise version has historically lacked a fully RESTful API compared with the cloud edition
- Reviewers note handwriting and some non-Latin scripts (e.g. Arabic) accuracy can need improvement
- Advanced Designer is a Windows desktop application
ERP integrations
Standard connectors/APIs for SAP; FlexiCapture for Invoices commonly pushes captured AP data to SAP (often via XML).
Connectors/APIs for Microsoft Dynamics; also integrates via Power Automate.
REST API plus JSON/XML output for delivery to downstream ERP, ECM, and AP systems.
