Overview
Stripe Tax is an indirect tax automation product built directly into Stripe's payments platform that lets businesses identify tax obligations, calculate and collect the right amount of sales tax, VAT and GST, manage registrations, and file returns. It calculates tax in real time across more than 100 countries and all US states, covering 600+ product categories, and determines rates using the business address, registrations, product tax codes, customer location and customer status.
Because it is native to Stripe, it can be enabled with a click in the Dashboard, a single line of code, or via the API, and integrates with Stripe's existing payments, billing and invoicing flows. It monitors economic nexus thresholds, tracks rate changes, validates VAT/ABN IDs for B2B customers and applies reverse charges where applicable.
For filing, Stripe can file US sales tax directly from the Dashboard (powered by TaxJar, which Stripe acquired in 2021), and partners with Taxually, Marosa and Hands-off Sales Tax for filing outside the US. Stripe is a privately held payments company headquartered in San Francisco and Dublin.
