Overview

SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) is SAP's high-volume warehouse management and execution solution, designed for complex, automated distribution centers. It can be deployed as embedded EWM inside SAP S/4HANA (introduced in S/4HANA 1610) or as a decentralized EWM instance that runs independently and connects to one or more host ERP systems (introduced in S/4HANA 1809 FPS01).

EWM provides granular storage-bin and storage-type modeling for diverse warehouse layouts such as high-rack, bulk and fixed-bin storage, along with putaway and stock-removal strategies, handling-unit management, layout- and process-oriented storage control, wave management and resource optimization. It supports goods receipt, goods issue, internal stock transfers, automated replenishment and management of dangerous goods.

The decentralized deployment is positioned for large, highly automated warehouses where scalability and independence from the ERP transaction load are important, while the embedded option simplifies the landscape for organizations standardized on S/4HANA. EWM also integrates with material-flow systems for conveyor and automation control.

Alternatives to SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) in Warehouse Management (WMS)

SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between embedded and decentralized EWM?

Embedded EWM runs inside SAP S/4HANA and is tied to that system, while decentralized EWM is a standalone instance operated independently and able to connect to one or more host ERP systems, making it more scalable for complex automated warehouses.

Is EWM the successor to SAP WM?

Yes. EWM is SAP's strategic warehouse solution, with the older WM module being phased out in favor of EWM and Stock Room Management.

Does EWM control warehouse automation?

Yes. EWM includes a Material Flow System (MFS) that directly controls conveyors, automated storage and retrieval systems and other equipment.
