ERP Adoption by Industry — 43,338 Published Implementations
Revenue share tells you who earns the most; it doesn’t tell you what companies like yours actually run. To answer that, ERP Research scraped and normalised every customer case study published by 11 major ERP vendors on their own websites — 43,338 implementations, 28,751 of them with an identifiable industry. The breakdown below counts published customer stories, so it reflects both real adoption and each vendor’s publishing activity — see the methodology note before quoting cross-vendor totals.
Key findings
- Odoo out-publishes SAP in retail — 1,296 of 3,518 retail implementations (37%) vs SAP’s 972 (28%).
- NetSuite owns two segments — #1 in Software/SaaS (36% of 2,350) and Nonprofits (45% of 676, where SAP has just 10 published stories).
- Microsoft Dynamics leads government — 40% of 369 public-sector implementations, ahead of Unit4 (30%); SAP has 28.
- SAP dominates regulated and process industries — Pharmaceuticals 96%, Automotive 81%, Oil & Gas 78%, Aerospace & Defense 78%, Food & Beverage 73% of published implementations.
- Manufacturing is ERP’s biggest industry — 6,333 implementations, 22% of the industry-tagged corpus; SAP leads it with 59%.
- S/4HANA has taken over SAP’s story pipeline — S/4HANA-family case studies outnumber legacy ECC/R3 stories ~7:1 (7,785 vs 1,094).

The S/4HANA Migration, Visible in SAP’s Own Stories
Of SAP’s 18,177 published customer stories, the product-attributed mix shows how completely S/4HANA has replaced ECC in what SAP showcases — even though many legacy ECC systems remain in production (ECC 6.0 mainstream maintenance ends in 2027).
| SAP product family | Published stories |
|---|---|
| SAP S/4HANA (incl. Cloud, Private Edition, RISE) | 7,785 |
| SAP Business One | 1,707 |
| SAP ECC / R/3 (legacy) | 1,094 |
| SAP Business ByDesign | 106 |
| Unspecified “SAP ERP” | 6,187 |

Methodology & How to Cite This Data
- Sources. Two first-party datasets: (1) 43,338 customer case studies published by 11 ERP vendors on their own websites (SAP, Odoo, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Infor, Acumatica, Unit4, Sage, SYSPRO, IFS, Epicor), scraped and normalised by ERP Research; (2) our tracked-customer database of 23,000+ company records, assembled from publicly published sources. Revenue-share figures are ERP Research estimates based on public reporting, shown separately.
- What the counts measure. Published customer stories — not raw install base. Vendors publish at very different rates (SAP 18,177 vs Epicor 31 in this corpus), so cross-vendor totals reflect publishing activity as well as adoption. Within-industry rankings and within-vendor mixes are the more robust reads.
- Normalisation. Industries are mapped to 20 standard categories; 28,751 of 43,338 case studies (66%) carry an identifiable industry. Cells with fewer than 5 case studies are excluded. SYSPRO’s stories lack industry tags and appear only in vendor totals.
- Independence. ERP Research is vendor-neutral — no vendor pays for placement or ranking in this dataset. Data last refreshed 2026-07-06.

What is SAP's market share in ERP?
We estimate SAP at roughly 23% of the global ERP market by revenue, which would make it the largest ERP vendor worldwide. The estimate is our own reading of public reporting, not a licensed analyst figure. SAP's position is strongest in large enterprise segments, particularly in manufacturing, oil & gas, and professional services.
Who is the largest ERP vendor?
On our estimates SAP is the largest ERP vendor by revenue at roughly 23% global share, with Oracle (including NetSuite) second at around 14% combined, Microsoft Dynamics at about 6% and Workday at about 6.5%. These are ERP Research estimates based on public reporting.
How big is the ERP market in 2026?
We estimate the global ERP market at roughly $55-60 billion in 2026, growing at a low-double-digit annual rate. Cloud ERP is the fastest-growing segment on our reading of public reporting, and now accounts for the majority of new deployments.
Which ERP has the most customers?
By sheer customer count, SAP and Oracle (including NetSuite) serve the most organisations globally. However, smaller vendors like Odoo and ERPNext have very large install bases due to their open-source or freemium models. Our database tracks named customers we can trace to a published source, rather than vendor-claimed install bases.
Is cloud ERP overtaking on-premise?
On our reading of public reporting, yes — cloud now accounts for the clear majority of new ERP implementations and the share is still growing. On-premise ERP continues to dominate the installed base because of legacy systems, but net-new deployments are overwhelmingly cloud-first.
What ERP do Fortune 500 companies use?
SAP S/4HANA and Oracle ERP Cloud are the platforms we see most often as the primary ERP at Fortune 500 companies. Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Workday are also common, particularly for specific functions like HR and finance. Many large enterprises run multiple ERP systems across divisions.
Which ERP is most used in manufacturing?
In ERP Research's corpus of 43,338 vendor-published implementations, SAP accounts for 59% of manufacturing case studies (3,745 of 6,333), followed by Odoo (964), Oracle NetSuite (522), Microsoft Dynamics (492), Infor (331), and Acumatica (256). Manufacturing is the single largest ERP industry, representing 22% of all industry-tagged implementations in the dataset.
What ERP do retail companies use?
Odoo leads published retail implementations in ERP Research's dataset with 1,296 of 3,518 retail case studies (37%), ahead of SAP (972), Oracle NetSuite (620), and Microsoft Dynamics (522). Retail is the second-largest ERP industry in the corpus after manufacturing.
Which ERP is most popular with nonprofits?
Oracle NetSuite dominates published nonprofit implementations with 304 of 676 case studies (45%), followed by Microsoft Dynamics (200, 30%). SAP appears in only 10 published nonprofit stories — the enterprise vendors largely cede this segment to mid-market platforms.
Which ERP do government agencies use?
Microsoft Dynamics leads published government implementations (147 of 369, 40%), followed by Unit4 (110, 30%) and Infor (60, 16%). SAP — dominant in most commercial industries — appears in just 28 published government case studies in the dataset.
Has S/4HANA adoption overtaken SAP ECC?
In SAP's own published customer stories, S/4HANA-family implementations (7,785 including S/4HANA Cloud and RISE with SAP) outnumber legacy ECC/R3 stories (1,094) by roughly 7 to 1. Note this measures what SAP publishes today, not the installed base — many long-running ECC systems are no longer showcased, and ECC 6.0 mainstream maintenance ends in 2027.
