What is Replenishment?

Replenishment is the process of restoring inventory to target levels by triggering and fulfilling supply orders as stock is consumed.

Definition

Replenishment is the ongoing process of refilling inventory, whether at a store, warehouse, or pick face, to keep stock at levels that support demand without excess. It can be driven by reorder points, min/max levels, demand forecasts, or pull signals such as kanban, and it spans both external purchasing and internal transfers. Effective replenishment balances availability against carrying cost and is increasingly automated. It is the operational engine that turns planning parameters like safety stock and reorder points into actual orders.

How Replenishment Works in ERP

ERP and WMS systems continuously compare available inventory to replenishment rules, such as reorder points or min/max levels, and generate suggested purchase orders, production orders, or warehouse transfers when thresholds are breached. Internal replenishment can refill pick faces from bulk storage, while external replenishment sources from suppliers. The system can automate order creation or route suggestions to planners for approval, and it feeds from demand and safety-stock parameters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between internal and external replenishment?

External replenishment sources stock from outside the company by issuing purchase orders to suppliers. Internal replenishment moves existing inventory within the network, such as transferring from a central warehouse to a branch or refilling a pick face from bulk storage. Both restore target levels, but one buys new supply while the other repositions what you already own.

What methods can drive replenishment?

Common methods include reorder-point and min/max rules, forecast or demand-driven planning, and pull signals such as kanban. Reorder-point methods suit stable items, while forecast-driven approaches handle trend and seasonality better. Many ERP systems let you assign different replenishment methods per item based on its demand pattern and value.
