How to Choose the Right ERP

Selecting the right ERP system depends on several factors:

  • Industry fit — Some ERPs are built for specific verticals (Epicor for discrete manufacturing, IFS for asset-intensive industries, Infor for process manufacturing). A system designed for your industry will require less customisation.
  • Company size and growth plans — Match the solution's sweet spot to your current size and where you expect to be in five years. Outgrowing your ERP is costly.
  • Deployment preference — Cloud-only, hybrid or on-premise? Cloud ERPs offer faster updates and lower upfront costs. On-premise gives more control over data and customisation.
  • Budget — Total cost of ownership includes licensing, implementation, training and ongoing support. Expect implementation costs to be 1–3x the annual licensing fee.
  • Integration needs — Consider your existing technology stack. Microsoft Dynamics integrates naturally with Office 365 and Azure. NetSuite connects well with Shopify and e-commerce platforms. SAP suits organisations already using SAP products.
