Why construction ERP is different
Construction finance is project finance — not company finance — and that breaks most generic ERPs. Revenue is recognised on percentage-of-completion, AR is 60–90 days out, retention is withheld across both sides of the ledger, and the labour on a government-funded project subject to public sector wage conditions can cost significantly more than on a comparable private commercial contract. The ERPs in this report were selected because they model this natively, not as a project-accounting bolt-on.
What the top 10 have in common
- Job-first chart of accounts — every transaction ties to a job, phase, and cost code, not a department.
- Interim applications for payment out of the box, including retention on both schedules.
- Subcontractor compliance — certificates of insurance, statutory payment notices, and CIS subcontractor returns as first-class data.
- Field integration — native or certified connectors to Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, HCSS, or Viewpoint.
- CIS-compliant payroll and public sector wage reporting for government-funded projects.
What separates the leaders
The top of the ranking is decided by two things: cost engine depth (does the ERP handle labour burden, equipment cost, and committed cost at job level?) and ecosystem fit (does it plug into the field-side tools your PMs already use?). The report flags the vendors that demo well for a single job but fall apart at portfolio scale.
Who this report is for
CFOs, financial controllers, project managers, and IT leaders at main contractors, specialist trades (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, roofing), heavy civil, housebuilders, and construction management firms.
