ERP Implementation Services: What's Included & How to Buy

Last reviewed: September 6, 2026

ERP implementation services explained: what's included, typical cost by company size, provider types, pricing models, and how to evaluate a firm.

ERP Implementation Services: What's Included & How to Buy

ERP implementation services cover the paid work of deploying a chosen ERP system: requirements confirmation, configuration, data migration, integrations, testing, training, and go-live support. They are typically delivered by the software vendor's own professional services team, a certified partner or value-added reseller (VAR), or an independent systems integrator (SI), and are priced separately from the software licence or subscription.

Services typically run 1-2x the software licence cost over the project. As a rough guide: SMB projects typically run $25,000-$150,000, mid-market projects typically run $150,000-$750,000, and enterprise projects typically run $1 million or more. Actual cost depends heavily on scope, the number of integrations, data quality, and how much the system is customized rather than configured out of the box. For a full cost breakdown by vendor and company size, see our ERP implementation cost breakdown.

ERP Implementation Services: What Is Included

A full-scope implementation engagement typically covers the following workstreams. Smaller projects compress or combine several of these; larger ones run them as parallel workstreams with dedicated leads.

WorkstreamWhat it covers
Discovery and requirementsConfirming scope, business processes, and success criteria before configuration starts
ConfigurationSetting up the system to match approved workflows, chart of accounts, and approval rules
Data migrationExtracting, cleaning, mapping, and loading data from legacy systems
IntegrationsConnecting the ERP to CRM, e-commerce, banking, payroll, and other systems
TestingUnit, system, and user acceptance testing (UAT) before go-live
TrainingEnd-user and administrator training, typically delivered in the weeks before go-live
Go-live supportHypercare - intensive on-call support in the days and weeks after cutover
Post-go-live optimizationTuning workflows, adding reports, and closing gaps found once the system is in real use

Discovery and requirements work often overlaps with earlier selection-stage advisory. If you have not yet defined what you need from the system, our ERP requirements wizard is a free way to scope modules, users, and processes before you brief providers.

Types of Implementation Service Providers

Four categories of provider deliver implementation services, and each fits a different budget and risk profile.

Provider typeWhat they offerBest fit
Vendor professional servicesThe software vendor's own delivery teamEnterprise deployments wanting single-vendor accountability
Certified partner / VARA reseller certified on one platform, often bundling licence sales with deliveryMid-market buyers wanting local support and one point of contact
Independent systems integrator (SI)A firm not tied to licence sales, sometimes multi-platformBuyers wanting delivery expertise decoupled from software sales incentives
Staff augmentationContract consultants who plug into an internally-led projectOrganizations with in-house project leadership needing specialist hands

Implementation Services Pricing Models

Providers typically price implementation work one of three ways:

  • Fixed-fee - a set price for defined scope, agreed up front. Lowest budget risk for the buyer, but scope changes are billed as change orders.
  • Time and materials (T&M) - billed by consultant hour or day against actuals. Flexible for evolving scope, but the buyer carries the overrun risk.
  • Milestone-based - payments released against defined deliverables (design sign-off, go-live, hypercare completion). Common on larger fixed-fee engagements as a way to structure cash flow and accountability together.

Day rates for implementation consultants typically range from around $150 for junior functional resources to $300+ for senior architects and specialist technical roles, varying by region, platform, and firm size.

Evaluating an Implementation Services Provider

Work through this checklist before signing a statement of work:

  1. Certifications and platform depth. Confirm the firm is certified on your specific product and version, not just the vendor family.
  2. Industry references. Ask for at least two live references in your industry and company-size band, not just logos.
  3. Named team, not a brand. Meet the consultants who will actually staff the project - implementation quality tracks the individuals assigned, not the firm's size.
  4. Methodology and testing rigor. A vague plan with no defined UAT and hypercare phase is a red flag.
  5. Pricing model and change-order terms. Understand what happens to cost when scope shifts, before it shifts.
  6. Post-go-live support. Confirm what hypercare includes and what support model takes over once it ends - see our ERP support services guide for the options.
  7. Independence from licence incentives. A partner earning commission on the licence has an incentive to sell more product; weigh that against a firm paid only for delivery.

Vendor-Specific Implementation Services

Implementation work differs meaningfully by platform. These guides go deeper on each vendor's process, typical timeline, and cost range.

SAP

SAP implementations - particularly S/4HANA - are among the most complex and highest-cost ERP projects, typically requiring certified systems integrators for anything beyond the smallest deployments. See our SAP S/4HANA implementation guide for methodology and phases, and browse SAP partners to find a certified integrator.

NetSuite

NetSuite's SuiteSuccess methodology pre-configures common processes, which typically compresses timelines for straightforward deployments while more complex, multi-entity projects still require significant partner-led configuration. Our NetSuite implementation guide covers cost and timeline in detail; the NetSuite partners directory lists certified firms.

Microsoft Dynamics 365

Microsoft's own Success by Design framework structures Dynamics 365 implementations into defined phases delivered by certified partners rather than Microsoft directly. Read the Dynamics 365 implementation guide for the phase breakdown, and browse Dynamics partners by region and specialization.

Oracle

Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP implementations are typically delivered by Oracle-certified partners or Oracle's own consulting arm, with data migration and integration work usually the largest cost drivers. See the Oracle Cloud ERP implementation guide for phase-by-phase timelines, and browse Oracle partners to compare firms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do ERP implementation services actually include?

They cover requirements confirmation, system configuration, data migration, integrations, testing, end-user training, go-live cutover support, and a post-go-live hypercare period. Scope varies by provider and contract - always confirm what is explicitly excluded before signing.

How much do ERP implementation services cost?

Services typically run 1-2x the software licence cost. SMB projects typically run $25,000-$150,000, mid-market projects typically run $150,000-$750,000, and enterprise projects typically run $1 million or more, depending on scope, integrations, and customization level.

Who provides ERP implementation services?

Four provider types: the software vendor's own professional services team, a certified partner or value-added reseller, an independent systems integrator not tied to licence sales, and contract consultants working as staff augmentation on an internally-led project.

Should I use the vendor or a partner for implementation?

Vendor professional services offer single-vendor accountability and deep product knowledge, often at a premium price. Certified partners typically offer more flexible pricing and local support. Independent SIs can offer delivery expertise decoupled from licence-sales incentives. The right choice depends on project size, budget, and how much you value a single point of accountability.

What is the difference between implementation services and ERP support services?

Implementation services deliver the initial project - configuration, migration, training, and go-live. ERP support services are the ongoing work after go-live: break-fix, patches, user questions, and small enhancements. Most contracts separate the two, though the same partner often delivers both.
