Overview
Tableau is a visual analytics platform for exploring, visualizing, and sharing data through interactive dashboards. Acquired by Salesforce in 2019, Tableau is known for its VizQL engine, which translates drag-and-drop actions into database queries and visual representations, allowing analysts to build expressive visualizations without writing code. Workbooks authored in Tableau Desktop or the browser are published to Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server for governed sharing.
Tableau connects to a wide range of enterprise and ERP data sources via native connectors and ODBC/JDBC, and can query live or use its in-memory Hyper data engine for extracts. It supports embedding through the Embedding API and Tableau's embedded analytics editions, letting organizations place interactive dashboards inside applications and portals.
The platform has incorporated AI capabilities through Salesforce Einstein, including Tableau Pulse for natural-language, metric-focused insights and proactive notifications, plus agentic analytics features in the Tableau+ bundle. Governance, data management (catalog, lineage, prep), and a centralized semantic and metrics layer round out the enterprise offering.
