Overview

Matillion is a cloud-native data integration (ETL/ELT) platform, sold today as the Data Productivity Cloud, that moves data from ERP, CRM, database and SaaS sources into cloud data warehouses and lakes for analytics and AI. Founded in Manchester, UK in 2011, the company now runs dual headquarters in Denver, Colorado and Manchester, with additional offices in San Francisco and Hyderabad. In 2025 Matillion introduced Maia, an AI Data Automation layer built on top of the core ELT engine, and the company now positions itself as an AI data automation vendor rather than a traditional ETL tool.

The platform uses a "pushdown" architecture: a visual, low-code/no-code pipeline designer builds transformations that execute as native SQL (or Python via Snowpark on Snowflake) inside the customer's own cloud data platform - Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery or Microsoft Azure Synapse - rather than in a separate processing tier. It supports batch loading, change-data-capture/streaming ingestion, pipeline scheduling, auto-generated pipeline documentation and source-to-target data lineage. The Maia layer adds AI agents that draft, elaborate and regenerate transformation logic inside the same pipeline canvas, plus a "Context Engine" for capturing business rules and a governance layer ("Maia Foundation").

For ERP-adjacent data, Matillion ships dedicated connectors for SAP (via the SAP ODP framework, covering ECC, BW and HANA sources, plus a separate SAP ASE database connector), Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Workday and Sage Intacct, alongside a broader catalog of database, file and SaaS connectors and a request-a-connector option for anything missing. The company reports SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification, states GDPR compliance, and is privately held after a Series E round that valued it at roughly $1.5 billion in 2022.

Features & capabilities

ERP & Business-System Connectors

Pre-built source connectors that extract ERP and adjacent business data into the pipeline.

  • SAP ODP connector (extraction across SAP ECC, BW and HANA via SAP's Operational Data Provisioning framework)
  • SAP ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) database connector
  • Oracle NetSuite connector
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 connector
  • Workday connector
  • Sage Intacct connector
  • Salesforce connector
  • Custom connector requests for sources not in the pre-built catalog

Pipeline Design & Transformation

The visual ELT designer and its execution model.

  • Drag-and-drop visual pipeline canvas with low-code and code-based components
  • Native SQL pushdown - transformations execute inside the destination warehouse
  • Python pushdown via Snowpark on Snowflake
  • Batch data loading
  • Change Data Capture (CDC) / streaming loading with throughput and change-volume monitoring
  • Pipeline scheduling with timezone, recurrence and day-of-week controls

Maia AI Data Automation

The AI layer Matillion launched in 2025 on top of the core ELT engine.

  • Maia Team: AI agents that build and maintain pipeline components
  • Maia Context Engine: captures business rules and data standards for the agents to apply
  • Maia Foundation: enterprise security and governance layer for agent actions
  • In-canvas AI refine actions (elaborate, shorten, regenerate) on transformation components
  • AI/RAG pipeline support for preparing unstructured data for LLM use cases

Governance & Documentation

Controls for tracing and auditing pipeline behaviour.

  • Auto-documentation of pipelines and components
  • Source-to-target data lineage view
  • Audit logging (Teams and Scale plans)
  • Custom SSO (Scale plan)

Deployment & Destinations

Where pipelines run and where data lands.

  • Destination support for Snowflake, Databricks (Delta Lake), Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery and Microsoft Azure Synapse
  • Hosted SaaS deployment
  • Hybrid deployment option (Scale plan)
  • Available via AWS Marketplace, Azure Marketplace and Snowflake Marketplace for consolidated billing

Common use cases

  • Extracting SAP data (ECC, BW or HANA) via the ODP framework into Snowflake or BigQuery for financial and operational reporting
  • Consolidating Oracle NetSuite data into a cloud warehouse for cross-entity, multi-subsidiary analytics
  • Loading Microsoft Dynamics 365 sales, service and finance data into a warehouse for unified dashboards
  • Pulling Workday HR and finance data alongside ERP data for combined workforce/financial analysis
  • Setting up streaming CDC pipelines from operational databases into a warehouse for near-real-time reporting
  • Producing auto-generated pipeline documentation and lineage to support governance and audit requirements
  • Using Maia's AI agents to draft and maintain routine pipeline transformations under human review

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Pushdown architecture executes transformations as native SQL (or Python via Snowpark) inside the customer's own Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, BigQuery or Synapse environment rather than a separate processing layer
  • SAP connectivity via SAP's own ODP framework, covering ECC, BW and HANA sources, plus a separate SAP ASE database connector
  • Maia adds an agentic AI layer (Team, Context Engine, Foundation) directly inside the pipeline designer, on top of the original ETL engine rather than as a bolt-on product
  • Listed on AWS, Azure and Snowflake marketplaces for procurement and billing through those platforms
  • Decade-plus, UK/US-founded vendor (Manchester 2011; now dual-HQ Denver/Manchester) rather than a recent entrant

Alternatives to Matillion in ETL & Data Extraction

Matillion — frequently asked questions

Does Matillion connect to SAP?

Yes. Matillion has a dedicated SAP ODP connector that extracts data from SAP ECC, BW and HANA using SAP's own Operational Data Provisioning framework, plus a separate connector for the SAP ASE database. Both move data one-way into a cloud data warehouse; the vendor does not publish an SAP-certification badge for either connector.

Does Matillion have a NetSuite connector?

Yes, a prebuilt Oracle NetSuite connector moves data from NetSuite into Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift or Google BigQuery. It is a no-code, source-only connector; Matillion does not advertise a "Built for NetSuite" certification for it.

What is Maia and how does it relate to Matillion?

Maia is Matillion's AI Data Automation layer, introduced in 2025 on top of the existing ELT engine. It adds AI agents ("Maia Team") that build and maintain pipeline components, a "Context Engine" that captures business rules, and a "Foundation" governance layer, all inside the same pipeline designer used for standard ETL work.

How is Matillion priced?

Pricing is consumption-based, using credits consumed by pipeline task-hours and any developer users added beyond a plan's included seats, across three tiers: Developer, Teams and Scale. No specific dollar prices are published; customers get exact figures from sales or through the AWS, Azure or Snowflake marketplace listings. A free trial is available.

What compliance certifications does Matillion hold?

Matillion reports SOC 1 Type II and SOC 2 Type II audit reports and ISO 27001 certification, and states GDPR compliance. Data at rest is encrypted with AES-256 and data in transit uses TLS 1.2/1.3, per the vendor's security page.
