Overview

IBM Planning Analytics is an enterprise financial planning, budgeting and forecasting (FP&A) platform built on the IBM TM1 in-memory OLAP database. The underlying TM1 engine traces back to 1983, when Sinper Corporation released it; the technology passed through Applix (1996 acquisition) and Cognos (2007 acquisition) before IBM acquired Cognos later in 2007, and IBM rebranded the suite as Planning Analytics (version 2.0) in December 2016. The platform is aimed primarily at finance teams, with purpose-built extensions into supply chain, sales, workforce, IT, marketing and ESG/sustainability planning.

The product is delivered through three main surfaces: Planning Analytics Workspace, a web-based environment for data collection, dashboarding, scorecards and code-free model building; Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE), an add-in that reads and writes directly against TM1 cubes from inside Excel; and a built-in AI forecasting engine with a generative-AI assistant, powered by watsonx, that summarizes forecast drivers, trends and confidence ranges. It can be deployed as a fully managed SaaS service (IBM Cloud, AWS or Azure), in a hybrid configuration on IBM Cloud Pak for Data, or fully on-premises on Windows or Linux under subscription or perpetual licensing.

IBM documents a certified, bidirectional connector to SAP (SAP BW, S/4HANA and HANA Cloud) through standard OData gateways, and an integration with watsonx Orchestrate that lets AI agents trigger planning tasks and forecasts via natural-language commands.
