Overview

Rossum is a cloud-native intelligent document processing (IDP) platform that automates the capture, extraction, validation, and routing of transactional business documents — primarily invoices, purchase orders, and order confirmations. Documents enter the platform through multiple channels (email, API, scanners, shared drives, EDI, and PEPPOL), are read by Rossum's proprietary transactional AI model, and have their data extracted, cross-checked against business rules and master data, and then posted into downstream systems such as ERPs. The platform is positioned around accounts payable automation but extends to order management, customs clearance, and quality-assurance document workflows.

The core differentiator is Rossum's approach to data extraction: rather than relying on fixed templates per document layout, it uses a transactional large language model (branded "Aurora") trained on transactional documents to read varied and previously unseen layouts, including handwriting, across a large set of languages. The model learns continuously from human corrections on the validation screen, where exceptions are surfaced to operators for fast review. Validation can compute or enrich missing fields (such as GL codes and tax codes), detect duplicates, and match line items against vendor and purchase-order master data.

Rossum was founded in 2017 by a team of AI researchers and is headquartered in London. In 2026 it was acquired by Coupa, the spend-management vendor, with which it had an existing certified integration. The platform is sold to mid-market and enterprise buyers on annual contracts, with pricing tied to document/page volume and workflow complexity. It is deployed as a multi-tenant SaaS on AWS with selectable regional data residency, and single-tenant deployment is available as a commercial option.

Common use cases

  • Automating accounts payable invoice capture and posting
  • Extracting and validating purchase orders and order confirmations
  • Order management document processing for sales/order teams
  • Customs clearance and logistics document handling
  • Duplicate-invoice and fraud-control checks before payment
  • Routing exception documents to operators for fast human review
  • Feeding validated transactional data into an ERP via prebuilt connectors

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Template-free transactional AI model that reads previously unseen document layouts
  • Continuous learning from human corrections on the validation screen
  • SAP-certified and Coupa-certified prebuilt ERP integrations
  • Selectable AWS data-residency regions (EU, US, Japan) with single-tenant option
  • Broad language coverage including handwriting recognition
  • Now part of Coupa, aligning IDP with end-to-end spend management

Considerations

  • Positioned at mid-market/enterprise; pricing (from $18,000/year) is high for small businesses
  • Setup and configuration can be lengthy and the extension-config UI is not always intuitive (per user reviews)
  • Minimum one-year contract commitment
  • Extraction accuracy and language handling can vary for certain document types (per user reviews)
  • Focused on transactional documents; not a general-purpose contract-lifecycle tool

Alternatives to Rossum in Invoice & Document OCR

Rossum — frequently asked questions

Which ERPs does Rossum integrate with out of the box?

Rossum offers prebuilt connectors for SAP (SAP-certified), Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics (AX and 365), Coupa, and Workday. Other systems can be integrated via its REST API or through RPA platforms such as UiPath, Blue Prism, and Automation Anywhere.

How much does Rossum cost?

The Starter plan begins at $18,000 per year with unlimited seats. Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate tiers are custom-priced based on document/page volume and workflow complexity. Contracts have a one-year minimum, and a 14-day free trial is available.

How does Rossum extract data without templates?

Rossum uses a proprietary transactional AI model ("Aurora") trained on transactional documents, allowing it to read previously unseen layouts — including handwriting — rather than relying on per-layout templates. The model learns continuously from operator corrections made on the validation screen.

Where is data stored and is Rossum compliant?

Rossum runs on AWS with selectable regional data residency in the EU, US, or Japan. It holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certifications, a SOC 2 Type II report, and TX-RAMP Level 1, and states GDPR and CCPA compliance. A single-tenant deployment is available as a commercial option.
