Overview

Shopify POS is the point-of-sale module of the Shopify commerce platform, combining an iOS/Android register app with Shopify-branded card readers and terminals so merchants can sell in person while sharing one product catalogue, customer list and inventory pool with their online store. It ships in two tiers: POS Lite, included free with every Shopify subscription, covers a single register with card payments, basic checkout and inventory sync; POS Pro is a paid per-location add-on that unlocks unlimited staff roles and permissions, multi-location inventory transfers, omnichannel fulfilment (buy-online-pickup-in-store, ship-from-store, local delivery), and retail-specific reporting.

Because it is built on the same backend as Shopify's online storefront, orders, customers, discounts and inventory levels stay in sync in real time across channels without a separate integration. Retailers running an ERP behind Shopify typically route POS transaction data into their finance and inventory systems through Shopify's own order/inventory APIs, a certified connector, or an iPaaS platform rather than a native ERP-specific POS module.

Shopify markets POS Pro primarily to single- and multi-location retailers, pop-up and event sellers, and specialty verticals such as apparel, bike shops, furniture, sporting goods and wine/liquor retailers that need to blend in-person and online selling under one inventory record.

Alternatives to Shopify POS in POS Integration

Shopify POS — frequently asked questions

Is Shopify POS free?

The base tier, POS Lite, is included at no extra software cost with every Shopify subscription plan and covers a single register with card payments and inventory sync. Card processing fees still apply. POS Pro, needed for multi-location and advanced retail features, is a separate paid add-on billed per location.

How much does Shopify POS Pro cost per location?

Shopify's own pricing page lists POS Pro at GBP 69 per location per month; the price commonly quoted in US-dollar markets is $89/month per location, discounted to roughly $79/month when billed annually. Shopify Plus merchants get 20 POS Pro locations included.

Does Shopify POS integrate with an ERP?

Shopify runs a Global ERP Program naming NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Infor, Acumatica and Brightpearl as partners, with a prebuilt NetSuite app that syncs orders and customers at checkout. Other ERPs, including SAP, are typically connected through third-party App Store connectors or an iPaaS platform rather than a native Shopify-built module.

What hardware does Shopify POS use?

Shopify sells its own POS Terminal countertop device ($349), a Bluetooth Tap & Chip card reader, and supports Tap to Pay directly on compatible iPhone and Android devices with no extra hardware, alongside compatible barcode scanners, receipt printers and cash drawers.

Can Shopify POS manage inventory across multiple store locations?

Yes, on the POS Pro tier. It syncs stock levels in real time across locations and the online store, supports inventory transfers and purchase orders between locations, and offers AI-assisted demand forecasting and rebalancing through Shopify's Sidekick assistant.
