Overview

AVEVA MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is a plant-floor execution platform aimed at batch-oriented, make-to-order and repetitive/hybrid manufacturers, including consumer goods and specialty chemicals producers. It provides a composable, modular operator interface for paperless work management, real-time production control, quality management and multi-site visualization, either on-premises or in a hybrid-cloud configuration.

The platform's functionality spans batch and recipe management, performance/operations/quality management, model-driven MES configuration, and production management. It monitors OEE KPIs and schedule adherence in real time, automates statistical process control (SPC) sample plans, and provides genealogy and traceability for investigations.

AVEVA MES sits operationally between enterprise planning systems and the shop floor. AVEVA Enterprise Integration (EI) is the dedicated middleware that synchronizes master data (recipes, BOMs, quality specs) and exchanges production orders, purchase orders, material definitions, inventory and execution results bi-directionally with ERP systems such as SAP and Oracle, using XML messaging, Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ), file drop, SQL or CSV transport, with store-and-forward continuity if the ERP connection drops.

  • Running paperless work instructions and SOPs for batch and make-to-order manufacturing
  • Monitoring OEE and schedule adherence in real time across multiple plants
  • Automating SPC-based quality sample plans and tracking genealogy for recall/traceability investigations
  • Maintaining production continuity with store-and-forward buffering when the ERP connection is down
  • Standardizing and digitizing best practices across a multi-site manufacturing network
  • Reducing waste and tracking emissions/sustainability KPIs on the production line

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Composable, modular MES architecture allowing incremental deployment rather than a single monolithic rollout
  • Dedicated Enterprise Integration middleware purpose-built for bi-directional ERP master-data and transaction sync (SAP, Oracle) with store-and-forward resilience
  • Native integration with AVEVA's broader industrial software stack (System Platform, PI System, CONNECT industrial AI) for plant-to-cloud data flow
  • Hybrid-cloud option keeps execution on-premises while extending analytics and multi-site visualization to the cloud

ERP integrations

Middleware (AVEVA Enterprise Integration)Bi-directional

Synchronizes production orders, purchase orders, material definitions, inventory, recipes/BOMs and quality specs via XML, MSMQ, file drop, SQL or CSV; historically also delivered via AVEVANET Gateway, which achieved certified integration with SAP ERP

Middleware (AVEVA Enterprise Integration)Bi-directional

Same master-data and transactional integration pattern used for SAP is applied to Oracle and other ERP systems

Alternatives to AVEVA MES in Manufacturing (MES / PLM)

AVEVA MES — frequently asked questions

Does AVEVA MES integrate with SAP?

Yes. AVEVA MES integrates with SAP through AVEVA Enterprise Integration middleware, which bi-directionally synchronizes production orders, recipes, BOMs, material and inventory data, and quality specifications between SAP and the shop floor, with store-and-forward continuity if the SAP connection is unavailable.

Does AVEVA MES integrate with Oracle ERP?

Yes. AVEVA MES uses the same AVEVA Enterprise Integration middleware pattern to exchange master data and production/execution information bi-directionally with Oracle ERP as it does with SAP.

How much does AVEVA MES cost?

AVEVA does not publish list pricing. It is sold as a quote-based subscription (including via the AVEVA Flex credits program), priced according to users, functional scope and production volume at the plant.

What manufacturing environments is AVEVA MES built for?

AVEVA MES targets batch-oriented and make-to-order manufacturers as well as repetitive volume production in automated or semi-automated settings, with particular use in consumer goods and specialty chemicals.
