NetSuite Manufacturing Demo: What You Actually See
A screen-by-screen guide to the NetSuite manufacturing demo — the modules covered, how long it takes, how to prepare, and the questions that pressure-test what you are shown.

A NetSuite manufacturing demo is a guided walkthrough of the production side of the NetSuite ERP suite: role-based dashboards, work orders and assembly builds, bills of material and routings, supply planning, shop-floor time capture, and the general ledger entries each of those transactions creates. Most run 45 to 90 minutes.
That definition matters because "NetSuite demo" and "NetSuite manufacturing demo" are not the same session. The generic demo is a finance-and-order-management tour. The manufacturing version — usually delivered against the SuiteSuccess for Manufacturing configuration — starts from a manufacturer's persona set and follows a physical product from customer order to build to cost of goods sold. If a rep books you the first when you asked for the second, you will spend an hour watching invoicing screens.

The NetSuite Manufacturing Demo, Screen by Screen
A typical manufacturing demo moves through six screen groups. Ask for them by name when you book, and ask the rep to confirm which of them are in the standard licence versus a paid add-on module.
1. The role-based production dashboard
The session almost always opens here. The demo user is a production or operations manager, and the landing page is a portlet grid: past-due work orders, work orders released this week, order fill rate, inventory below reorder point, and a task list. The point being made is that the manager starts the day from one screen rather than from four systems.
What to watch for: whether the portlets are standard saved searches you could rebuild yourself, or custom SuiteAnalytics workbooks that came out of a services engagement. Ask which. The answer tells you how much of the dashboard is included and how much is billable configuration.
2. The work order and assembly build
The heart of the demo. The rep opens a work order, shows the linked assembly item, expands the bill of material, and walks the routing — operation sequence, work centers, setup and run times. They then record an assembly build and the system captures the actual quantity produced plus the components and labor consumed.
The genuinely useful moment is what happens next: the build posts immediately to WIP and finished goods, and the rep can drill from the transaction straight into the GL impact. Ask them to do that drill-down explicitly. Real-time costing is the strongest structural argument for a single-suite ERP over a best-of-breed MES bolted onto an accounting package, and it is easy to assert and easy to demonstrate — so make them demonstrate it.
3. Bills of material, routings, and revisions
Expect a multi-level BOM with at least one sub-assembly, plus a revision record showing an effective-date change. If your products are configurable, engineer-to-order, or change frequently, this is the segment to slow down. Ask to see a BOM revision applied to an open work order and what the system does with in-flight production. That behaviour is where implementations get expensive. 4. Supply planning and purchasing
Demand planning, reorder points, and the supply planning workbench: the rep runs planning, shows recommended work orders and purchase orders side by side, and mass-releases them. A purchasing manager persona then reviews vendor lead times and consolidates POs.
This segment is usually shown against clean demo data with stable lead times. Push on multi-source items, minimum order quantities, and what happens when a supplier misses a date. 5. Shop-floor time capture and downtime
A shop-floor operator persona clocks onto an operation, records quantity complete and scrap, and logs a machine downtime reason code. The demo will show the elapsed time accumulating against the work order. Ask what device that screen was designed for — a tablet on the line behaves very differently from a laptop, and the standard interface is not always the one you saw.
6. Executive reporting and the single record
The close is usually a controller or CEO persona: margin by product, order fill rate, work-order variance, inventory turns. Everything reconciles because everything came from the same tables. Ask for one report to be built live, from scratch, in under five minutes. Prebuilt dashboards prove nothing about how hard your reports will be.
Inside SuiteSuccess for Manufacturing
SuiteSuccess is the preconfigured implementation methodology most manufacturing demos are built on. Rather than a blank system, it ships an industry configuration: defined roles (production manager, purchasing manager, shop-floor operator, controller, executive), a KPI and dashboard set per role, standard reports, a chart of accounts, and a staged rollout plan that adds capability in phases.
Two things to establish about it on the call:
- Which edition and which add-ons. Work orders and assemblies, WIP and routings, advanced manufacturing, quality management, and demand planning are not all in the same bundle. The demo shows them as one product. Your quote will not.
- How much of the demo is SuiteSuccess versus custom. If the answer includes SuiteScript, SuiteFlow customisation, or a partner-built bundle, that is implementation scope, not licence scope.
NetSuite quality management and the wider NetSuite modules list are useful cross-checks against whatever the rep says is "included."
Demo Length, Format, and Who Should Be in the Room
Manufacturing demos run in three formats:

Bring the person who releases work orders, the person who owns the BOM, and the person who closes the month. A demo attended only by IT and finance will miss the operational objections that decide the project. Preparing Before the Call
Preparation is what turns a demo from a sales presentation into evidence.
- Send one real product structure in advance. A three-level BOM with a purchased sub-assembly and an outside operation. Ask them to build it in the demo account.
- Send three transactions you find painful today. A rush order, a partial build, a scrap-and-rework. Ask to see each one end to end.
- Write down your close timetable. Then ask where in the demo each of those steps happens.
- Fix your user counts by role. Full users, employee-centre users, and shop-floor-only users are priced differently, and the number you give shapes the quote you receive.
- Agree what "pass" looks like before the session so the debrief is a scoring exercise, not a mood.
Nine Ways to Pressure-Test the Demo
- Is this the standard interface, or a customised role we would pay to build?
- Which of these screens require an add-on module beyond the base manufacturing licence?
- Show me a BOM revision hitting an open work order.
- Show me a partial build, then a scrap and rework against the same order.
- Where does the standard costing variance land in the GL, and who reviews it?
- What happens to planning when a supplier lead time changes mid-run?
- How does this behave on a tablet on the shop floor with poor Wi-Fi?
- Build one report live, now, that you have not built before.
- Which of the last five manufacturing implementations of this size went live on the original date?
Gaps the Demo Is Unlikely to Cover
Demo environments are curated. They almost never show data migration from your legacy system, integration with existing machine controllers or a label printer, performance at your transaction volume, the sandbox-to-production release process, or what happens at renewal when your user count has grown. None of these are hidden maliciously — they simply do not demo well. Raise them anyway, in writing, and treat the answers as part of the evaluation.
Also absent: cost. Which is why a demo should never be the only conversation you have.
Costs to Establish Before You Book
NetSuite is quoted as an annual subscription made up of a base platform licence, per-user licences by role type, and module add-ons — plus a separate, usually larger, first-year implementation fee. Manufacturing configurations tend to sit above the mid-market average because work orders, WIP and routings, quality, and demand planning are often layered on top of the base suite.

Is there a NetSuite demo specifically for manufacturers?
Yes. Ask explicitly for a manufacturing demo based on the SuiteSuccess for Manufacturing configuration. The default booking path often routes to a generic finance and order-management tour, which shows almost none of the work order, BOM, routing, or shop-floor screens a manufacturer needs to assess.
How long does a NetSuite manufacturing demo take?
A standard live manufacturing demo runs 45 to 60 minutes. Recorded product tours are 5 to 15 minutes and are only useful for shortlisting. A scripted demo run against your own bills of material and production scenarios takes two to four hours and is what you should request once you are down to two or three vendors.

Both normally require a qualifying conversation first.
Are NetSuite manufacturing case studies worth reviewing first?
Yes, but read them for structure rather than outcome. Note the production type, plant count, transaction volume, and which modules were in scope — then ask the rep for a reference of comparable size and process. A case study from a discrete assembler tells a process manufacturer very little about their own implementation.
