Overview
SAP Master Data Governance (SAP MDG) is SAP's master data management application for centrally creating, changing, validating and distributing master data such as business partners, customers, suppliers, materials/products, and financial objects (charts of accounts, G/L accounts, cost centers, profit centers). It ships either embedded within SAP S/4HANA or as a standalone hub that can govern data for multiple SAP and non-SAP ERP systems in a heterogeneous landscape.
MDG is built around change-request-based governance: a user or an automated trigger raises a change request for a new or modified master data record, the record is validated against configurable business rules (using BRF+) and optional external data-quality services, routed through a rule-based approval workflow, and only written to the active area (and replicated onward) once approved. This staging model prevents unvalidated or duplicate data from reaching downstream systems.
Beyond governance of net-new records, MDG includes consolidation and mass-processing capabilities to load master data from multiple source systems, standardize formats, and detect duplicates before establishing a single, trusted source of record. Data is replicated to target systems (SAP or non-SAP) using SOA/web services, ALE/IDoc, RFC, or file-based exports. SAP MDG on S/4HANA offers both a 'classic' mode with the broadest domain and app coverage and a newer 'cloud-ready' mode for extensibility via key user tools.

Features & capabilities
Central Governance & Workflow
Change-request-driven creation, review and approval of master data.
- Change request processing with staging and activation
- Rule-based approval workflow (single- or multi-step)
- Create, change, block/unblock and mark-for-deletion processes
- BRF+ business rule validation
- Fiori-based UIs for requesting and approving master data
Business Partner, Customer & Supplier Governance
Governance of business partner master data and its customer/supplier roles.
- Unified business partner data model (BP/customer/supplier)
- Role-based maintenance of customer and supplier master records
- Duplicate check during business partner creation
- Data validation and enrichment rules
Material / Product Master Governance
Governance of material and product master data used across logistics and manufacturing processes.
- Central creation and change of material master records
- Configurable workflow for material governance
- Cross-plant and cross-view validation rules
- Mass processing of material data
Financial Master Data Governance (MDG-F)
Governance of accounting and controlling master data objects.
- Governance of charts of accounts and G/L accounts
- Cost center and profit center governance and hierarchies
- Company/company code master data governance
- Hierarchy maintenance for financial reporting structures
Data Consolidation & Quality
Bringing existing master data from multiple sources into a clean, de-duplicated baseline.
- Consolidation of master data from multiple source systems
- Duplicate detection and match/merge
- Data standardization rules
- Data quality checks via internal rules or external service calls
Replication & Distribution
Distributing governed, activated master data to downstream systems.
- Replication via SOA/web services
- ALE/IDoc-based distribution
- RFC-based distribution
- File-based (CSV) export for non-SAP targets
Extensibility & Custom Domains
Configuring MDG beyond its delivered data domains.
- Custom (client-defined) master data domain support
- Key user extensibility in cloud-ready mode
- Configurable UI and data model extensions
Common use cases
- Running change-request approval workflows so new customers, suppliers or materials can't reach production data without sign-off
- Consolidating and de-duplicating material or business partner records after a merger, acquisition or system consolidation
- Centrally governing cost centers, profit centers and chart-of-accounts hierarchies for consistent financial reporting
- Acting as a standalone master data hub that distributes governed data to several SAP ERP/S/4HANA instances and non-SAP systems
- Enforcing data quality rules (formats, mandatory fields, duplicate checks) before material or vendor master records are activated
- Extending SAP S/4HANA's embedded MDG to custom, organization-specific master data domains
- Replicating validated master data to downstream systems via IDoc, web service or file export in a heterogeneous landscape
Strengths & considerations
Strengths
- Deployable either embedded inside SAP S/4HANA or as a standalone governance hub spanning multiple SAP and non-SAP systems
- Deep, native data model coverage for SAP-specific objects (business partner, material, cost/profit center, chart of accounts) that third-party MDM tools typically have to model generically
- Change-request/workflow-based staging model (BRF+ rules, approval routing, activation) built directly into the governance process rather than bolted on
ERP integrations
Runs embedded within S/4HANA (classic or cloud-ready mode) governing business partner, material and financial master data natively
Can run as a separate MDG hub governing and distributing data to SAP ERP 6.0 systems
Distributes governed master data to third-party ERPs via SOA/web services, ALE/IDoc, RFC or CSV file export, typically brokered through middleware
Pricing
SAP does not publish standard list pricing for the on-premise/embedded product; licensing is quote-based (named user and/or module licensing negotiated with SAP). Third-party pricing trackers cite a Cloud Edition subscription starting around $87/month (or ~$1,116/year) for 5,000 governed objects, but this is not confirmed on SAP's own site and should be treated as indicative only. Alternatives to SAP Master Data Governance in Master Data Management
SAP Master Data Governance — frequently asked questions
Does SAP MDG integrate with S/4HANA?
Yes. SAP MDG runs embedded within SAP S/4HANA, governing business partner, material and financial master data natively, and can also run as a standalone hub connected to S/4HANA and other SAP or non-SAP systems.
How much does SAP Master Data Governance cost?
SAP does not publish standard pricing for the on-premise/embedded product; it is quote-based and depends on named users, modules governed and deployment model. A separately marketed Cloud Edition has been reported at roughly $87/month for 5,000 governed objects, though this figure comes from third-party pricing trackers rather than SAP's own published pricing.
Can SAP MDG govern data for non-SAP ERP systems?
Yes. When deployed as a standalone hub, MDG can consolidate and govern master data sourced from non-SAP systems and distribute validated records back out via web services, IDoc/ALE, RFC or file export.
What master data domains does SAP MDG cover out of the box?
Delivered domains include business partner (customer/supplier), material/product, and financial objects such as chart of accounts, G/L accounts, cost centers and profit centers, plus support for defining custom domains.
