Overview

Dynamics 365 Field Service is Microsoft's field service management application, built on the Power Platform and Dataverse, for organizations that dispatch technicians to customer sites to install, service, or repair equipment. It covers work order management, scheduling and dispatch, customer asset tracking, preventive maintenance, inventory/truck stock, and a technician-facing mobile app.

Scheduling is powered by an interactive drag-and-drop schedule board and an optional Resource Scheduling Optimization (RSO) add-on that uses AI to optimize technician assignments across drive time, working hours, skill matching, parts availability, and customer time windows. Copilot capabilities are embedded for work order summarization and natural-language queries over field data, and a Scheduling Operations agent (preview) can proactively re-optimize schedules as conditions change.

As part of the Dynamics 365 suite, Field Service is designed to run alongside Microsoft's own ERP applications (Business Central, and previously Finance and Supply Chain Management) so that work order costs, revenue, and inventory movements flow into the general ledger, but Microsoft also publishes integration guidance for connecting it to SAP S/4HANA and SAP C/4HANA for organizations that run a non-Microsoft ERP as their system of record.
